Pottery Barn Knock Off Wall Art

PB Knock OFF Collage

This Pottery Barn knock off easily makes the top five favorite things I’ve ever made list. The PB version cost a whopping $399. Mine cost around $15. Their version is a little over 4 ft. x 4 ft. and mine is exactly 4 ft. x 4 ft. Let me just tell you this thing is massive in both size and weight!

It was actually really easy to make, just time consuming. There is a lot of cutting involved, which you very well could do with a miter box but would take foooorrever! If you like puzzles, this is the project for you!

Here’s how I made mine:

This is all of the wood I started with. I think I ended up grabbing more from around the garage. The only wood I bought was the giant 4×4 piece of wood for $10. This piece served as the piece that held all of the other wood in place. I also bought the two long pieces of wood for $2 each.

I just started cutting wood and placing it on. I used the PB version as a starting point and then just went from there.

And there it is with all of the wood pieces filled in.

I shot this picture so that you could see the varying heights of all the wood. This is exactly what I wanted. It has so much texture!

I then stained around the base board with my favorite red mahogany stain. It would probably be easier to do this first so you do get stain on all of the wood pieces.

Then I started painting. I would just pick up the board, paint it, and put it back in place. I knew if I took all of these boards off I would never get them back the way they were! I used just about every color blue, tan and brown paint that I had. I would take one color and hop all over the board and paint 3-4 pieces of wood and then switch colors.

All fresh and painted!

I used wood glue to glue all of the pieces down. I used 1 small bottle of glue and some of another! While the glue was drying, I put paint cans or anything heavy I could find on top to hold it down. I really hope that a board doesn’t fall off and hit someone on the head!

The last thing I did was sand over the entire thing. Then, with my husbands help, we hung it up. We found the studs and screwed it straight into the wall. I think there are probably 8 screws total.
